Playwright Neil Simon here blends comedy with pain in his first solo original screenplay, directed by Arthur Hiller in the same year as his box-office hit Love Story. Jack Lemmon stars as the Ohio businessman who decides to combine a job interview in New York with a night on the town in the company of his wife, Sandy Dennis. However, their excursion turns into a nightmare as they become increasingly bothered and bewildered by the Big Apple's ruthless manners. Lemmon takes it all with despairing aplomb, but Dennis seems less able to deal with the mounting calamities, leaving us to wonder whether comedy should be so serious. Simon and Hiller would team up again the following year for Plaza Suite. TH
