A superb movie chronicling the life of writer and artist Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy, portrayed with astonishing passion and sensitivity by Daniel Day-Lewis. All concerned were rightly showered with praise and plaudits at the time, including Oscars for Day-Lewis and ex-Casualty staff nurse Brenda Fricker as Christy's stoical mum. There were some low rumblings that Day-Lewis's role should have been given to a disabled actor, a view which won some sympathy, but nothing can be taken away from this all-round great movie. It's also notable for the penultimate screen appearance of the marvellous Ray McAnally. SH
