The classic status of this Disney landmark is merely buffed up by time, as successive generations discover its peerless mix of ecological message and anthropomorphic fun. Adapted from Felix Salten's book, it traces the formative seasons of a deer — imbued with human characteristics, as are his companions Flower, the shy skunk, and Thumper, the exuberant rabbit — who must learn the lessons of life and love in the forest. The death of his mother at the hands of a hunter (Man personified) remains one of cinema's most memorable, though it isn't actually shown. Disney's original circle of life movie, Bambi still has plenty to tell children and strikes a deft artistic balance between naturalism and cartoonery. AC
