Unlikely to satisfy fans of JRR Tolkien's novels, this animated version is also small beer compared to animated spectaculars such as Mulan and The Prince of Egypt. Produced by Saul Zaentz — the man behind One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest and The English Patient — it seems less concerned with Tolkien than the West Coast drug culture of the mid-1970s and as a herald of New Ageism. It's also rather slow and virtually impossible to follow unless you know the source material. AT
