Stuart Maconie charts the history of modern Britain in 50 records, telling the story of the last seven decades through the music that sound-tracked conflict, social change, parties, prosperity, plenty, poverty, peace and war. The first episode focuses on Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again and the Second World War, hearing from people who served in the armed forces and those on the home front, exploring the significance of music during the war years and how it kept the troops' spirits up while comforting those waiting anxiously back in the UK.
