It takes courage to fill a legend’s shoes — but only a fool would decline the chance. This is the story of how 19-year-old Scot Halpin became a substitute for another guy when he stood in for the Who’s drummer Keith Moon on the opening night of their 1973 Quadrophenia tour.

The famously overindulgent rock ’n’ roll octopus had passed out three-quarters of the way through their set, after a dalliance with some elephant tranquillisers, and Pete Townshend asked for a volunteer to fill in behind the kit. Scot confessed to being exhausted after his three-song stint. But, by all accounts, the kid was all right.

Nick Barraclough revisits November 20, 1973, when 19-year-old Scot Halpin was invited to play alongside his heroes the Who during the opening night of their Quadrophenia tour at Cow Palace, San Francisco. The amateur drummer was drafted in from the audience to replace Keith Moon, who had collapsed on stage, and pulled off a near flawless performance. Nick catches up with Scot's widow Robin, who describes the impact of the night on her husband's life.
