Review

In this Olympics year, Blackpool began its proud celebrations of a centenary of electrical arrangements that have, quite literally, lit up the town when Team GB medal winners Beth Tweddle, Greg Rutherford and Luke Campbell jointly threw the switch on the dazzling illuminations.

Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, the man charged with the duties of creative curator for the 100th show, guides us around the architectural heritage of the first resort in Britain for workers. His sublime use of the English language makes every description as bright and pulsating and glamorous as the million-plus coloured lights. Never has a tramway sounded so gorgeous. LLB is fully charged and switched on — and his delivery is electrifying.

Summary

Creative curator of the Blackpool Illuminations Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen attends the lights' centenary switch-on, before paying tribute to the town's architecture, focusing on the restored Winter Gardens and Tower, the 19th-century piers and art deco casino. MP Gordon Marsden, Professor Fred Gray and CEO of Pleasure Beach Amanda Thompson discuss what the area can do to build on its heritage and attract a new generation of tourists.
