Review

Sci-fi writer John Wyndham may be known for his carnivorous plants in The Day of the Triffids, but it is this tale of telepathic children, fundamental Christianity and post-apocalyptic mutants that is often considered his best.

Set in the distant future, the story follows David Strorm, whose rare ability to communicate telepathically with others conflicts with the message preached by his evangelical father. When his secret is revealed, David must journey south to save his friends from the reckoning of the Norms.

Adapted by Jane Rogers, this fantasy drama not only offers escapism and adventure but also highlights the dangers of conformity in an age of racial intolerance and nuclear stand-offs, a warning that should still be heeded today.

Summary

Part one of two. John Wyndham's science-fiction story about a group of young people with telepathic powers who face persecution for being different in a religious post-apocalyptic society, and must avoid detection or risk confinement in a mutant colony. Dramatised by Jane Rogers.
