Writer Gaylene Gould discovers how contemporary musicians in the West are incorporating griot traditions into their work. In African culture, a griot is an oral historian, adviser and lyrical storyteller, but now modern artists in the West have reassigned the word as a term for a particular genre of music. Gaylene meets hereditary griots Seckou Keita and Sona Jobarteh, poet Inua Ellams and Malian musician Fatoumata Diawara to discuss their perspectives on the role's rich history. From 2012.
