Stubborn Kind of Fella: Remembering Marvin Gaye

Trouble Man

Episode 5 Trouble Man

Smokey Robinson explores the self-destructive darker side of Marvin Gaye's personality, which led to his untimely death in 1984. Deeply insecure and torn between the impulses of discipline and disorder, he became dependent on cocaine, which caused extreme paranoia. As his second marriage failed and tax difficulties forced him to flee to Europe, and a heated argument with his father ended in the fatal shooting. With contributions by his wife Janis, biographer Steve Turner and Motown historian Sharon Davis. Part of the Motown Season.
