Review

In a post-Enron world, to learn that a rogue professional had been pocketing his clients' financial interests would be a low-level scandal. But, as this new dramatisation of Harley Granville Barker's 1905 tale of morals and manners makes clear, embezzlement is a breach of trust that can damage many innocent lives.

Edward Voysey, the youngest and most delicate- natured son of a buccaneering solicitor, opens the play in an intensely emotional state. He has discovered that his father and his grandfather had both been defrauding their clients. His dear, placid mother (played by Phyllida Law, above) knows nothing of the looming scandal. Should Edward stay quiet and save the family name or do the right thing and confess to the injured parties? It’s a fascinating and timely look at how “decent” men can turn bad.
