The story of composers Andrzej Panufnik and Witold Lutoslawski, who were thought to be the great hopes of Polish music at the outbreak of the Second World War, but went their separate ways in 1954 when Panufnik defected from the People's Republic to Britain. With his compatriot gone, Lutoslawski emerged as the country's foremost composer, but his use of avant-garde techniques challenged prevailing Soviet aesthetics. Includes contributions by Panufnik's widow and his composer daughter, as well as scholars of Lutoslawski's work.
