The Afrobeat Revolutionary

Fela Kuti

Episode 1 Fela Kuti

Neneh Cherry presents a two-part profile of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, who mixed Nigerian drum rhythms, rapping, soul horns, electric organ and sinuous guitar lines. An open critic of colonialism, globalism and the corruption of his home country, he survived imprisonment and torture at the hands of the Nigerian military junta, but died of an AIDS-related illness in 1997.
