Summary

Jonathan Freedland explores how the fashion for the male beard has made a return to British life in the past few years, with the likes of footballers, actors, hipsters and many others meaning the wearing of some form of facial hair is now commonplace. He compares this with its prevalence in the middle of the 19th century, when the likes of Charles Dickens, Wimbledon champion Spencer Gore and cricket pioneer WG Grace all let their whiskers flow. Last in the series.
