First Folio Road Trip

First Folio Road Trip

Emma Smith traces the story of seven of the original 750 copies of Shakespeare's First Folio to learn how it helped make his reputation as our national poet and an international star. We take it for granted now that Shakespeare is our national poet, and his First Folio almost a religious relic, but it wasn't always so. She learns about Sir Edward Dering, a shopaholic young nobleman from Kent, the first documented purchaser of a First Folio, which he bought along with a scarlet suit, a pot of marmalade and a present for his baby son.
