Donald Macleod explores the ugly, beautiful and hyper-expressive musical world of Alexander Zemlinsky, as well as his turbulent early life in pre-First World War Vienna. Donald begins by painting a picture of the Austrian capital at the turn of the 20th century as an artistic, philosophical and musical nexus, and also investigates Zemlinsky's close relationship with his friend, and later brother-in-law, Arnold Schoenberg.
