The Cuarteto Casals Play Mozart's and Haydn's Quartets

The first of two concerts at London's Wigmore Hall featuring the six string quartets that Mozart composed in the first half of the 1780s and dedicated to his friend Haydn. They were his reaction to the new and sophisticated musical environment he had encountered after moving from Salzburg to Vienna in 1781, and to his growing acquaintance with, and admiration for, the quartet masterpieces of Haydn himself. The Cuarteto Casals, from Spain, perform all six works over two concerts, starting with the G major with its brilliant contrapuntal finale, the tragically brooding D minor, and the confident E flat. Presented by Fiona Talkington. The Cuarteto Casals. Mozart: String Quartet in G, K387; String Quartet in D minor, K421. 8.15 Interval. 8.35 Mozart: String Quartet in E flat, K428. Recorded at Wigmore Hall on 7 January 2016. The second concert, featuring the quartets K458, K464 and K466, will be broadcast on Tuesday 17 January.
