Cathy FitzGerald takes a close look at one of Rachel Ruysch's flower paintings, inviting listeners to perform their own examinations using high-resolution images on the Radio 4 website. She reveals how this great Dutch artist was influenced by her unusual childhood as the daughter of Frederik Ruysch, whose weird tableaux created from human skeletons and embalmed bodies, insects and plants were hugely popular in 17th-century Amsterdam.
