Journalist and educator Abdul-Rehman Malik explores the connections between Islam and the origins of coffee. He discovers the beverage was originally popularised by Sufi mystics in Yemen, who would drink it to aid in energising their meditational dances during nocturnal devotions. Coffee was even enjoyed in the sacred mosque of Mecca, until 16th-century religious authorities declared a fatwa against it. Abdul's investigation reveals how, as the bean spread across the world, coffee-drinkers faced condemnation, persecution and prejudice from Constantinople to London, but despite adversity, the drink still managed to remain `a universal libation'.
