Sid James was at the heart of the phenomenally successful Carry On films and one of the best-loved and most easily recognised comic actors of his day. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, the many roles he played were all, in essence, the same. Simon Heffer traces his journey, from bit-parts in British comic films, to his years of triumph in the Carry On series and his dramatic death on stage in 1976.
