Review

A testing role for Lenny Henry — not just for the strong London accent the role requires but because he is playing a character who has killed, twice.

Frank Watt was sent to prison in the 1980s after murdering a man in a riot. While in jail he stabbed another man to death, although this was in self-defence. The years behind bars have institutionalised Frank, but the 23-hours-per-day in a cell have permitted him to study.

The drama opens with the lifer on his first experience of day release. London has changed beyond recognition but the crises that brought him to murder have not. A string of familiar faces present him with a serious challenge: continue with his controlled life of reform or permit the inner demons to let him lose control and wreak revenge. Henry’s performance is thoughtful and entirely convincing.

Summary

By Peter Jukes, starring Lenny Henry as double murderer Frank Watt, who is allowed out of prison for a series of days prior to being released on licence. Frank looks forward to his first taste of freedom, but when it arrives he finds it difficult to adjust as he realises things have changed a lot since the 1980s. He also has some old business to attend to.
