This is a genuine sailing experience on a Tall Ship for those seeking to rediscover a maritime tradition without sacrificing creature comforts. Intimate enough to sail close to the shore, the beautifully crafted Star Clipper takes a ten-day trip around the Aegean Sea – from the marvels of Athens to the medieval port of Monemvasia and on to the vast caldera of Santorini and its stunning cliff-top villages, full of blindingly white cubist houses.

Via charming Patmos in the Dodecanese, we sail on to unspoiled Chios, before reaching Turkey, the small port of Dikili, the ancient sites of Troy or the First World battlefields of Gallipoli. The tour culminates in magisterial Istanbul, the centre of shifting civilisations for over 3,000 years, a city of breathtaking palaces, churches, mosques and bazaars. 

Prices are per person, based on two people sharing a twin cabin with a limited number of single cabins available on all decks, at the relevant supplement. The price includes full board from dinner on your day of arrival until breakfast on your final day; if you choose to travel with us on any of the full day excursions by coach, a packed lunch will be provided. Day 1

Fly to Athens.

Day 2

Enjoy a walking tour of Athens, visiting the Acropolis – one of the greatest wonders of the ancient world.  Also see the Acropolis Museum with its amazing glass floor displaying the houses and streets below.  Stroll through the Agora and explore the picturesque old district of Plaka before an afternoon at leisure.

Day 3

Enjoy your first breakfast on board the SPV Star Clipper before savouring the fresh sea breeze.  Known as the ‘Gibraltar of the East’, Monemvasia is considered a wonderful time-capsule of a medieval Greek town.  You have plenty of time to wander and explore as you wish.

Day 4

Stand on deck this morning for one of the finest experiences Greece has to offer – sailing into the vast caldera of Santorini.  Our included trip visits the highest point on the island as well as some of the most interesting small villages, as well free time in cliff-top Oia.

Day 5

Today you anchor in Patmos, the ‘Jerusalem of the Aegean’.  Our tour departs the pretty port of Skala for the Grotto of the Apocalypse, where St John lived for two years.  Also see the 11th century monastery of St John – an architectural masterpiece, the Monastery’s museum and the 300 year old mansion of the Simandiris family.  Afternoon at leisure.

Day 6

Today visit Chios, one of the richest and largest islands in the Aegean.  See the Kambos area with its grand mansions and citrus groves, the unique village of Pyrgi and Mesta – an amazingly well-preserved living medieval village.

Day 7

Your first glimpse of Turkey as the Star Clipper glides into the small port of Dikili.  Today you will explore the ancient Hellenistic city of Pergamon, seeing the remains of the Temple of Trajan, the altar of Zeus and the Asclepion sanctuary.

Day 8

Drive inland for a guided tour of Troy, home of the famous ‘Wooden Horse’ and a complex archaeological site which remains a romantic and alluring place.  On the other side of the Dardanelles Strait lies the Gallipoli peninsula, an alternative option to Troy should you wish.

Day 9

Today you tour the exotic city of Istanbul, visiting the Blue Mosque, symbol of the city.  Continue to the breathtaking Haghia Sophia, arguably the greatest church ever built and then on to the famous Grand Bazaar with its 4,000 shops!  Your tour ends at the Topkapi Palace, now a spectacular museum with a superb display of arms and a breathtaking Treasury.
