Can you imagine how horrible it would have been to phone up Sue Perkins to break the news that The Great British Bake Off was moving to Channel 4? Fortunately you don’t need to: the former GBBO presenter found out on Facebook.

Speaking to food critic and occasional MasterChef judge Jay Rayner for The Observer, Perkins admitted: “I learnt the news from a friend’s Facebook page.

“For a while it was really painful, but everybody has to do as they see best. It was seven years of my life and it had seen me through highs and lows.

“For three months, I’d go off to a stately home, play whist with Mary Berry, see all my friends and meet some really great bakers. Then, when it was all done, I’d go off on holiday.”

And although Perkins and former co-host Mel Giedroyc declined to “go with the dough” and move to Channel 4, Perkins did say she felt sad when it got to the time of the year when the duo would usually have been prepping for another series: “Mel and I talked a lot last month, about what we’d have been doing at this point and that point.”

However, she harbours no bad feelings towards the new presenting duo Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding.

“They’re all more than capable of turning out a brilliant show,” she said. “The issue is chemistry.”

In this case, the proof of the pudding is in the watching.
