EastEnders: Lee marries Whitney – but faces wedding night heartache

What next for the pair's marriage following this evening's drama?

EastEnders fans have been left fearing for Lee Carter’s mental health at the climax of Friday’s episode of the BBC1 soap. Viewers saw Lee tie the knot with bride Whitney, only for the groom to later cut a forlorn figure on his wedding night.

Lee – who has previously been shown suffering with depression – pretended to be asleep on their bed, halting Whitney’s plans for a romantic first evening as husband and wife. Earlier in the day, he was also shown struggling to say his vows and deliver his groom’s speech at the reception in the Queen Vic.

An under pressure Lee had already been seen taking out an emergency loan in order to make his nuptials a day to remember. But Whitney currently remains unaware that Lee is now wrestling with both his guilt and a sizeable debt.

Actor Danny-Boy Hatchard, who has played former soldier Lee since 2014, is set to leave EastEnders in the months ahead, although show bosses are currently remaining tight lipped about his exit storyline.

But it seems that Whitney’s happiness at getting wed could well turn out to be short lived. Will Lee eventually come clean about his financial mess? And could the secret he’s been carrying result in the two of them parting company?
