A cracking tale starring Steve McQueen, directed by Peter Yates, and featuring the granddaddy of all movie car chases up and down the hilly streets of San Francisco. McQueen plays Bullitt, the eponymous police lieutenant charged by Senator Robert Vaughn with guarding an informer whose testimony will bring down the Chicago mafia. When the informer is killed, all hell breaks loose in a complex, absorbing labyrinth of double-crosses and false identity. It was the perfect role for the ever-taciturn McQueen. Fine support, too, from Vaughn and Jacqueline Bisset as Bullitt’s girlfriend in a movie that is worth watching for that thrilling, extended car chase alone.
