PETE’S DRAGON ★★★★

Dragons don’t breathe fire in Disney movies; they befriend small boys who are lost in the woods. In a live-action remake of the 1977 kids’ movie, with Bryce Dallas Howard, the titular reptile gets a CG makeover without losing his original goofy charm. Think Scooby-Doo but bigger, greener and frankly, better than your average Hanna-Barbera film spin-off.

NERVE ★★★

If you remember the startling 2010 documentary Catfish (about an internet relationship that becomes a bit too real) then you may be curious to see this cyber thriller by the same directing team. Emma Roberts, the neice of Julia and daughter of Eric, stars alongside Dave “brother of James” Franco. It’s a very small, interconnected world, isn’t it?

THE SHALLOWS ★★★

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water… Blake Lively is the pretty blonde surfer chick who gets in over her head while riding the Mexican waves. B-movie thrills ensue after a Great White shark comes over all peckish. Avoid if you’re about to go on a beach holiday.

WIENER-DOG ★★★

A dachshund weaves his way through the lives of Greta Gerwig, Danny DeVito and others in a pitch that sounds ripped from Lassie or the Littlest Hobo. In fact, no. This is another puppyish roll-around in bile-soaked misanthropy from director Todd Solondz (Happiness). The only well anyone falls down is a metaphorical one, made of broken dreams.
