EastEnders: classic Den and Angie two-hander to be shown tonight on BBC4

The 1986 showdown will be screened as part of an evening of programmes celebrating director Antonia Bird

BBC4 is reshowing the classic EastEnders two-hander between Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) and his wife Angie (Anita Dobson) as part of an evening of programmes honouring its director Antonia Bird.

Bird, who died in 2013, would go on to direct big-screen dramas such as Priest and Ravenous, but had an early screen credit helming the famous showdown between the Queen Vic landlord and landlady that resulted in a hysterical Angie revealing that she had just six months left to live.

When it was first shown in October 1986, the episode pulled in a viewing audience of 14 million.

EastEnders fans can see the episode at 8.30pm and it’ll be followed by the documentary From EastEnders to Hollywood: Antonia Bird at 9pm a reshowing of her 2000 drama Care starring Steven Mackintosh at 10.30pm.
