TRIPLE 9 ★★★

Director John Hillcoat gives this hi-octane heist movie some visual panache as Woody Harrelson and Chiwetel Ejiofor play cops and robbers on the streets of Atlanta. Kate Winslet’s in there too, cast in the unlikely role of a Russian mafia boss. Accents aside, it’s a proper old fashioned crime thriller.

ORTHODOX ★★★

Stephen Graham is a butcher by day and a boxer by night in this unusual crime drama that shifts tone and genre as it goes on. Things are kept fresh by the setting of a north English Jewish community and the noirish descent into criminality.

THE FINEST HOURS ★★★

A digitally enhanced disaster flick based on the true story of a coast guard who rescued a group of sailors from a tanker torn in two by a storm in 1952. Chris Pine leads the way.

BONE TOMAHAWK ★★★★

Kurt Russell leads a gang of gunslingers in an effort to rescue a woman from the clutches of a supernatural enemy that even the native Americans are scared of. The western rides high once more, albeit with horror sharing the saddle.
