Martin Freeman’s Captain America: Civil War character will be in more Marvel movies

The Sherlock star's role is being kept under wraps for good reason – there's more to him than meets the eye

Ever since the first trailer for Captain America Civil War dropped – in fact, since long before it when his casting was first announced – we’ve been dying to know who Martin Freeman is playing when he makes his Marvel debut.

Advertisement has already had a brief glimpse of him in action, looking stern and rather spiffing in a suit in a special sizzle reel from the upcoming film.

Thus far we’ve gathered that Freeman is playing a government official, who makes it very difficult to work out which side he’s on. He’s either with The Avengers, or the civilian powers that wish to keep them under control with special legislation.

However, it seems as though there’s a very good reason we’re not being told much about him, as Marvel boss Kevin Feige explains in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“He’s under the cloak of secrecy,” he begins. “There are a lot of amazing actors in this movie. Some of them play larger roles than others. And in some cases there are some you will meet ever so briefly in this film and then will be expanded upon in future films. He falls into that latter category.”

In short, Freeman’s got bigger fish to fry in more Marvel films down the line. So, the dream of him one day meeting Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange on the big screen is well and truly alive.

We wonder if he’ll get one back by telling him off for the goatee and ‘tache? A girl can dream.
