After his departure from The X Factor rumours have been rife that presenter Dermot O’Leary will pop up as a new host on BBC motoring show Top Gear. But oh no, Mr O’Leary and the show’s ‘tame racing driver’ The Stig have gone and got their own car show together. Yes, the pair have bagged themselves an exciting new Saturday night entertainment show on the BBC titled The Getaway Car.
The new format will see family members compete in various driving challenges – including members of the public going up against The Stig himself – with the tasks set to seriously test relationships. Yep, arguments over map reading will seem like a walk in the park after this.
“We all think we are great drivers, but what tickled me most is seeing how people, who obviously love each other very much, speak to each other when they are behind the wheel of a car,” joked O’Leary. “It brings out the worst in all of us… but in a fun way. It’s a warm show that will stretch a family’s patience with those they love most in the world. I had a whale of time doing the pilot and now can’t wait to make the series.”
“The Getaway Car is an ambitious and exciting Saturday night entertainment show that enhances the BBC’s commitment to producing some of the most original entertainment formats around,” said BBC’s Controller of Entertainment and Events Katie Taylor. “With Dermot in the driving seat, I’m sure the BBC1 audience will love it.”
“It’s very exciting to welcome both Dermot O’Leary and The Stig to Saturday nights on BBC1,” added Charlotte Moore, Controller at BBC One.
The show will air in 2016 on the BBC. No news yet on whether it will go up against ITV’s Saturday night juggernaut The X Factor, which O’Leary hosted for eight years, as I’m told a date has yet to be set for its launch.
