Beetroot fails, Aga-induced issues and enough tears to make even a firm bottom soggy all made for a rather dramatic first Bake Off episode. So here’s what the new batch of bakers, some former contestants and a few foodie celebs had to say about it all…

Like the rest of the nation, 2012 winner John wanted Sandy as his new best friend…

But like Mary and Paul, he was absolutely not ok with Stu’s showstopper…

2014 runner up Richard Burr noticed something eerily familiar about Matt…

While 2013 finalist Kimberly was also reminded of something while watching the new contestants…

The newbies seemed to mostly tweet before the episode and then only dare to return to Twitter once it was all over…

While Tamal re-lived the cake-induced anxiety of it all…

Stu said his goodbyes….

And of course, most importantly of all, Dorret’s fears of her showstopper disaster being broadcast to the nation were allayed by the kind comments on Twitter…

Actually, even more crucially than Dorret’s tears, Paul Hollywood addressed the innuendo that is still reverberating in our brains…

A good question, Paul. A good question.

Bake Off will be back next week at 8pm on BBC1, hopefully for more moments like this…
