Sam Smith takes inspiration from Love Actually for Billboard Music Awards acceptance speech

The singer-songwriter accepted his Top Male Artist prize via video link after recovering from vocal surgery in New York

Last night saw this year’s chart toppers flock to Las Vegas for the annual Billboard Music Awards, but there was a notable absence on the red carpet: Sam Smith, the British singer-songwriter who has dominated the airwaves in 2014 with hits such as Stay with Me and Money On My Mind.

The 22-year-old is recovering from vocal surgery in New York and was therefore unable to speak let alone accept his award for Top Male Artist from Celine Dion. But that didn’t stop him from delivering a memorable acceptance speech…

Appearing via video link, Smith didn’t utter a word, instead using a series of boards to (aptly) thank Billboard…
