Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell casts a spell over viewers

The first episode of BBC1's magical period drama won over Twitter - even if everyone did keep their shirts on

BBC1’s adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke began last night, with Eddie Marsan and Bertie Carvel as the titular rival magicians seeking to bring back magic to England during the Napoleonic wars – and it’s safe to say the new Sunday-night fixture was a success with the viewers (you can read our review here).

Eddie Marsan’s Mr Norrell was the hit of the episode – maybe this will break him out of the “ordinary blokes” he talked to us about playing? Or just get him a few new members for his reading group…


Marc Warren came in for some praise too, though – especially his new barnet:


Though some wondered if the BBC might have really burned out its candle budget this year.


And at the end of day, some couldn’t help but compare the series to another BBC show. Could Jonathan Strange hit the same dizzying heights as Poldark?

Guess there’s always hope for a shirt-removal charm next week, eh?
