AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON ★★★★

The superheroes are back in another (literally) Earth-shattering adventure, which sees them fighting robotic nemesis Ultron. Remarkably, the high standard of the original is pretty much maintained throughout a story that mixes incredible spectacle with believable characters.

THE FALLING ★★★★

There are elements of David Lynch and Picnic at Hanging Rock in Carol Morley’s dreamy drama, set in a girls school in the 1960s. Game of Thrones’s Maisie Williams and Florence Pugh play best friends who succumb to a mysterious fainting malady.

THE GOOD LIE ★★★

Based on true events, this feelgood drama follows a group of Sudanese refugees who come to America to start a new life, and are helped by charity worker Reese Witherspoon.

STONEHEARST ASYLUM ★★

Yes, the lunatics really have taken over the asylum in this gothic psychological thriller set in 1899. There’s a fantastic cast – Ben Kingsley, Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Michael Caine, Brendan Gleeson – but this just doesn’t live up to its promise.
