Sky Atlantic’s Arctic drama Fortitude is to return for another ten episodes and is set to feature an array of new characters alongside some survivors from the original series.

The broadcaster announced it was bringing back the homegrown show ahead of tonight’s finale this evening (Thursday 9th April).

Starring Sofie Grabol, Stanley Tucci, Michael Gambon, Richard Dormer and Christopher Eccleston, the series has been a success for Sky, with an average of 1.3 million viewers tuning in per episode, according to consolidated ratings, to follow the eerie story of unexplained killings in the isolated town.

Viewers have already seen a number of the heavyweight stars killed off and producers are remaining tight-lipped about who will be returning in order to avoid spoilers about tonight’s season finale. However, sources suggest that the new series will contain some of the current lead actors along with minor characters.

Actor Richard Dormer, who plays the town’s grizzled police chief Dan Anderssen, indicated to RadioTimes.com at the Game of Thrones premiere last month that he would be returning to the show.

Announcing the commission, Sky Atlantic director Zai Bennett paid tribute to writer Simon Donald in a statement which said he has “created a unique and unsettling story which, week after week, has captivated our customers”.

Donald added: “It’s a privilege to return to Fortitude. It’s a place where the real and the feared live side by side, where old dark secrets thaw out into the chill light of the arctic day. I’d never been anywhere like Fortitude before and I can’t wait to go back”.

The new series is expected to air next year.
