Russell Tovey and MyAnna Buring are in a “godforsaken corner of a godforsaken country” in the first trailer for Banished.

The Being Human and Ripper Street actors have been transported to 1788 Australia in Jimmy McGovern’s new BBC2 drama, and are struggling to survive in Britain’s first penal colony in New South Wales.

It might be period piece, but no one will be going upstairs to take off their hats. The seven-part drama, which also stars Julian Rhind-Tutt, Rory McCann (aka Game of Thrones’ The Hound), Orla Brady and Joanna Vanderham, is more flickering candlelight, grubby skirts and unbridled passions than social niceties and formal dinner parties.

The 30-second trailer packs in gun shots, floating bodies, tears and swinging nooses, all to the haunting sound of Lorde’s Everybody Wants to Rule the World. We can’t wait.

Banished begins on Thursday 5th March on BBC2 at 9pm
