Trouble is brewing Down Under in Jimmy McGovern’s dark new BBC2 historical drama Banished.
Ripper Street’s MyAnna Buring stars as English criminal Elizabeth Quinn, sent to Australia in 1788 after punching a woman who turned out to be a Duchess.
During her voyage to the other side of the world, she falls for fellow prisoner Tommy Barrett (Julian Rhind-Tutt).
Russell Tovey is also an English convict abroad, and joins The Paradise star Joanna Vanderham and Doctor Who’s Orla Brady in the Australian penal colony.
Australian actor David Wenham (who appeared in 2014 BBC drama Top of the Lake) plays Arthur Phillip, the idealistic governor of the settlement.
Check out some of the new cast photos and behind-the-scenes pics from the seven-part drama, which begins on BBC2 on Thursday 5th March.
The writer is Cracker creator Jimmy McGovern, who told RadioTimes.com at the end of last year that he had come to prefer writing as part of a team.
“I have been at it for over 30-odd years now,” he said. “I can [write alone], and I will do it, but of the two I much prefer working with other people than working alone.”
Episode five of Banished has been written by Accused writer Shaun Duggan, and the series producer is Sita Williams.
