First look at Gemma Chan in new sci-fi series Humans

The co-production between Channel 4 and US network AMC also stars Colin Morgan, William Hurt, Katherine Parkinson, Rebecca Front and Neil Maskell

A few months after we learned about planned sci-fi US/UK series Humans, starring Colin Morgan and William Hurt, we’re finally getting a chance to see what their take on the future looks like – and it’s pretty creepy.

The series, written by Spooks scribes Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, examines a “parallel present” where humanity is dependent on advanced robot slaves called synths – but strange events leave doubts as to whether the mechanical helpmeets can be trusted.

Now, the first image from the series has been released showing Fresh Meat and Sherlock actress Gemma Chan playing one such synth called Anita, who is bought by a husband (Tom Goodman Hill) for his troubled lawyer wife (Katherine Parkinson) – but Anita may not be all she seems. She certainly looks pretty mysterious…

Oscar-winning actor William Hurt, Merlin’s Colin Morgan, Utopia’s Neil Maskell and The Thick of It’s Rebecca Front round out the rest of the cast as a mix of humans and synths, with broadcast expected sometime later this year.

Based on Swedish series Real Humans, Humans was originally announced as a co-production between Channel 4 and Xbox. However, after the latter’s decision to close its entertainment branch, AMC (the US TV network behind Breaking Bad and Mad Men) picked up the baton to join Channel 4 in making the series instead.
