Just 23 sleeps to go until fans get a festive feast of Doctor Who. The Christmas special sees Peter Capaldi back in the Tardis – with Jenna Coleman beside him – as the Doctor rubs shoulders with Santa Claus, of all people…

It looks like Father Christmas – played by Nick Frost – won’t be a baddie, but Capaldi has admitted that the one-off episode will be “very scary and very jolly” all at once.

“It manages to do both of those things and there is a sleigh ride in it and a Tardis,” he tells BBC South East Today. “What more could you want?”

The official synopsis released by the BBC gives some clue as to what could be haunting our post-turkey slumbers: “The Doctor and Clara face their Last Christmas. Trapped on an Arctic base, under attack from terrifying creatures, who are you going to call? Santa Claus!”

And, according to Capaldi, “he’s the actual Father Christmas. He’s not a false Father Christmas – he’s the absolutely real Father Christmas who the Doctor’s been anxious to meet for some time and finally does get to meet and has a few words with.”
