BAFTA-nominated director Oliver Parker is at the helm as names including Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Gambon are announced in this remake of Jimmy Perry and David Croft’s iconic British comedy.

The film will see the Home Guard in 1944 readying themselves to invade France as World War II reaches its climax. But the arrival of a glamorous journalist and a spy among the ranks sends them into a spin.

Filming starts this month, with the whole film shot on location in Yorkshire.

But who will play, whom? That is the question on our lips. Let’s get to know the new faces of Dad’s Army…

Bill Nighy as Wilson

58641

Hopping from his recent turn in Pride and his upcoming return to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2, Nighy will step into the cheery role of The Honourable Sergeant Arthur Wilson, previously played by John Le Mesurier. An ever so gentle soul, he uses casual charm to undermine his superiors. “Do you think that’s wise, Sir?” is one such line we may hear…

Catherine Zeta-Jones as Rose

From The Legend of Zorro to Chicago and Side Effects, Zeta-Jones will have the Home Guard all hot under the collar playing the role of glamorous journalist Rose Winters. Oo-er!

Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring

58642

Let’s hope Toby Jones has been working on being puffed up and pompous and yelling “You stupid boy!” as he’s swapping The Hunger Games and Harry Potter for the iconic role of Captain Mainwaring originally played by Arthur Lowe. “This is war you know!”

Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones

58643

“DON’T PANIC!” Quartet star Tom Courtenay is taking on the role of Corporal Jones. He’ll have to get used to saying, “Permission to speak, Sir?”

Michael Gambon as Godfrey

58644

Could there be a better casting than Gambon for this role? We’d struggle to find one. Yep, Gambon is swapping his pointy hat and glitzy Dumbledore robes for a Home Guard uniform, which will probably involve a fair few trips to the bathroom (“May I be excused, Sir?”) and a good couple of naps (“I must have dropped off”).

Blake Harrison as Pike

58645

Fresh from a trip around Australia in The Inbetweeners, it doesn’t look like Harrison is set to be taken any more seriously as he takes on the role of Pike. Basically he just needs to be ready to be yelled at a lot…

Danny Mays as Walker

58646

Danny Mays is hopping from one war film to another as he leaps from Atonement to playing the role of Private Joe Walker. Walker is the man for getting supplies that are supposed to rationed, so we’ll be expecting a loveable but shifty character. Let’s hope he’s working on that moustache eh?

Bill Paterson as Frazer

58647

Doctor Who star Bill Paterson has landed the iconic role of Scottish Private James Frazer. A dour, exaggerator who’s usually to be found yelling, “We’re doomed!”

Sarah Lancashire

It’s not clear yet what role she will play, but fans will be delighted to see Sarah Lancashire cast in this ensemble having earned rave reviews for her recent turns in Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax.

Alison Steadman

Another big-name on the scene, Gavin & Stacey star Alison Steadman seems like a fantastic match to this line-up.

Mark Gatiss

How does this man do it? Not only does he star and co-create BBC’s hugely popular detective series Sherlock, he writes Doctor Who episodes AND he’s been cast among this top-notch cast, too. Fans will be delighted.

Annette Crosbie
