Robert Sugden is to make a comeback to Emmerdale this autumn – just in time to jeopardise brother Andy’s upcoming wedding to sweetheart Katie Addyman.
“I am absolutely over the moon to be joining the show,” says actor Ryan Hawley, who is taking over the role from Karl Davies. “Playing such an interesting character with a complicated history in the village is so much fun, especially as my family are all big Emmerdale fans. I can’t say much about what’s going to happen but I am delighted to be a part of it.”
Robert and his adoptive brother Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) have been at loggerheads ever since the pair went to war over the affections of Katie (Sammy Winward). Long-time viewers will recall that, back in 2004, Katie – who was dating Andy at that time – began an affair with his adoptive brother Robert (Karl Davies). Katie did go on to marry Andy, but when the truth was finally revealed, he tried to shoot Robert and ended up hitting Jack instead.
Now, old rivalries look set to be reawakened just as Andy and Katie have rekindled their love and are set to marry. Kate Oates, Emmerdale’s series producer, said of the upcoming storyline: “I’m delighted to welcome Ryan to the show. Robert is a complex character and when we were looking for someone to take over the role, Ryan had the perfect balance of charm and edge. Robert Sugden’s life has moved on in many ways… but those ingrained feelings – about his father, Andy, Katie, and the village where he grew up – are sure to find an explosive outlet.”
The character of Robert Sugden originally appeared on the ITV soap between 2001 and 2005, with actor Karl Davies last being seen when Robert returned in 2009 for a one-off appearance to coincide with his dad Jack’s funeral.
