Mel B is the new face on this year’s X Factor and she’s bringing a big dollop of Scary Spice to the judging panel, including a Spice Girl nickname for all of the judges.

“Cheryl’s would probably be something obvious like Geordie Spice,” says Mel, adding that she absolutely adores Cheryl. “She’s gorgeous, she’s an artist, she’s confident, she’s strong, everything I love in a woman, she is fabulous.”

“Louis for sure would be Nutty Spice, because he’s a little bit out there,” Mel explains. But she draws the line at thinking up a name for Mr Simon Cowell.

“Simon… I don’t want to say anything about Simon because I don’t want to get fired, so I’ll leave that one blank.”

Although, when asked whether Mel thinks the Spice Girls would make it through the X Factor if they'd ever auditioned she scoffs, "Oh god, I don't know. I'd like to think they would get through, but I don't know."

Of joining the panel, Mel B admits all of the judges are very competitive this year. And it seems Mel, who has also been a part of the panel on The X Factor in Australia, is aware she may be a tad intimidating to wannabe stars.

“I think all four of us are quite intimidating. I think a lot of people out of the gate are scared of Simon, but I don’t know about me. I think they really like me… NOT!”

Indeed, it’s a simple leap from Scary Spice to being known as the ‘scary judge’, but Mel insists, “As a judge I would like to think that I’m just really honest. I just call it how it is and whatever I see and whatever I feel, I just express that.”

The X Factor returns Saturday 30 August at 8:00pm on ITV
