Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes – first look

McKellen plays an ageing Holmes in the forthcoming adaptation of Mitch Cullin's novel A Slight Trick of the Mind

Is this what Benedict Cumberbatch will look like aged 93…? Possibly not, but it is a first glimpse of an ageing Sherlock Holmes, as played by Sir Ian McKellen in upcoming film Mr Holmes.

McKellen tweeted the image last night, marking his place in the long line of screen incarnations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective, which include Cumberbatch’s current BBC1 modern-day take.

McKellen, actually a sprightly 75, is playing almost 20 years older in the adaptation of Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, which sees a retired, elderly Holmes eeking out his remaining years in a remote Sussex farmhouse, keeping bees and grappling with his waning mental powers, until a 50-year-old unsolved case returns to haunt him.

Mr Holmes is a collaboration between BBC Films, See-Saw Filma and AI, the production arm of Icon Films in the UK.
