Emmerdale spoilers: Sammy Winward on Katie and Andy's relationship future

The spark between Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher) and Katie Addyman (Sammy Winward) is to be reignited next week when the pair share a kiss.

Katie has been growing ever closer to her ex-husband in the wake of his farming accident, but what will happen now that the pair have given in to temptation? "It's the beginning of Andy and Katie, really," says Sammy Winward. "I loved Bernice and Andy together, but I think it was only ever going to be a short-term thing because they are very different."

Speaking of Andy's relationship with Bernice (Samantha Giles), it certainly doesn't help matters that she's the one who happens to spy him kissing Katie. "Yes, Bernice decides that she needs to get away from everything, so she goes to Australia for two weeks," continues the actress. "It's upsetting actually because Bernice is into Andy and it can't be nice watching your boyfriend kissing someone else."

So what is it that has pulled Katie back into Andy's orbit? Could it be the fact that she's had such bad luck with men of late, what with those disastrous relationships with both Declan (Jason Merrells) and Adam (Adam Thomas)? "Well, every relationship has ended quite badly," agrees Winward. "With Andy there's a level of comfort there. She knows what she's going to get from him.  And for both of them, at this time, it's what they both need and what they both want. It just so happens that they fancy each other as well - that also helps!"

And what advice would she offer her character should her rekindled feelings for Andy blossom? "Katie and Andy have to go back to their relationship with a clean slate. If there's still bitterness and resentment over what happened and why they split up, then that's never going to work. They need a fresh start."
