Baywatch to James Bond – get the screen swimwear look

From Ursula Andress to Angelina Jolie - to Daniel Craig in those shorts - here's how look like a star on the beach this summer

Looking for inspiration for your swimwear styles this summer? Then how about taking some tips from a selection of the most iconic on-screen swimwear moments! No matter what your shape or style there is a look to suit everyone and make you feel super confident on the beach this holiday season.

Ursula Andress – James Bond, Dr No

When Ursula Andress’s Honey Ryder emerged out of the water in James Bond’s first film adventure Dr No, a screen goddess was born. This moment is so iconic that it was recreated by Halle Berry in Die Another Day in 2002 as an homage to Ursula. White can be dangerous for swimwear but if you go for a piece with good lining or a pattern then you wont have to worry about exposing more than you intended!

Here is my selection to getting Ursula’s classic beach siren style:

Bikini top, H&M £12.99, Monocrome textured hipster Bikini bottoms, Marks and Spencer £16, Farah Chain Cuff Sandal, Miss Selfridge £30,  Monocrome textured bandeau Swimsuit, Marks and Spencer £39.50, Bikini top, H&M £12.99, Bikini bottoms, H&M £7.99, Alexis Dove Silver drop Clamshell earrings £80, Alexis Dove Silver Helios Disc necklace £175.

Plenty of options here for different body shapes, the structured look on the Left is great for curvy but confident women – the bra will lift and support you and the belt on the briefs streamline your shape. My favourite however is the swimsuit from Marks and Spencer. I would never have thought about M&S for swimwear but this one-piece is gorgeous. I love the lines on it as these will really trick the eye into thinking you’re as tiny as the vertical lines (clever!) and the waist line will further accentuate your natural curves. Keep this look natural and simple. Shell themed accessories will echo Ursula’s screen moment and give a touch of bling.

Bo Derek – 10

Described as the “perfect 10” in this sexy 1979 comedy, Bo Derek becomes the obsession of Dudley Moore’s character, who chases her around the world in hopes of capturing her affections and, hey, I can see why! This look is only for the brave, as her gold swimsuit leaves nothing to the imagination.

Here are my picks to getting Bo Derek’s perfect 10 look:

Gold Shiny Plait Swimsuit, Topshop £30, Lace insert Shirt Dress, Accessorize £27, Janey Leather Flip Flops, Phase Eight £39, Sequin detail Plunge Swimsuit, £12, Alexis Dove Gold Helios Cascade earrings £135, Alexis Dove Gold Clamshell pendant £90.

I really love this style – not sure if I could pull it off myself but boy I wish I could! These gold swimsuits are very revealing, however the key is to style them with simple and classic accessories. I think a shirt-dress looks really great over a swimsuit and is so practical to slip on and off throughout the day. Teaming this with some very simple tan leather flip-flops keeps the look neutral. If you want to add some jewellery these pieces from Alexis Dove are really stunning and fit brilliantly with Bo’s style. A perfect 10? I think so!

Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth and Gena Lee Nolin – Baywatch

I couldn’t do a swimwear piece without including Baywatch; it’s amazing how a simple red swimsuit has become so famous (we’ve all tried doing the slow beach run, haven’t we?) but few pull it off like these ladies. In this look I have styled the simple swimsuit to a glamorous pool bar look, which is a guaranteed attention grabber.

Ruched side Swimsuit, George at Asda £12, Savida Leather Metallic Wedge Sandals, Dunnes Stores £50, Lacey Burn Out Kaftan, Boux Avenue £28, Sunglasses The Islington Light, Colin Leslie Bamboo Eyewear £95, Speedo Medallist Swimsuit, Next £22.

Two quite similar swimsuits here, however the Speedo version is more representative of the Baywatch style with the high legs and racer back. I think the George number is really great as well though; the ruched sides will make it more forgiving on your stomach and the strap will be much more practical for tanning. I am a big fan of Boux Avenue’s swimwear range and this kaftan is really gorgeous. It’s very soft and light so perfect for keeping cool, and the pattern is subtle but makes it stand out from a plain white kaftan. To finish the look off, go for some killer gold wedges and a pair of stylish sunglasses. This pair from Colin Leslie eyewear are perfect. They are very lightweight being made from bamboo and the white rim is a really cool touch.

Angelina Jolie – Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life

Angelina Jolie as Tomb Raider Lara Croft – well it couldn’t have been anyone else! Jolie plays this role brilliantly making many a gamer’s fantasy come true. In this scene in the second movie, Jolie removes her silver wetsuit to reveal a very simple but very striking black bikini look. It’s quite sporty, which of course compliments her character, and the small accessory details work brilliantly. This is an ideal look for someone who is less confident in swimwear as the style is very structured and can be worked in a bikini, or a swimsuit.

Here are my top tips to getting Angelina’s action woman style:

Bandage Monokini, Lipsy £30, Cuff, Marks and Spencer Collection £12.50, Savida Gold Leather Platform Sandal, Dunnes Stores £50,  Black Bralet and Shape Enhancing Pants, Next, Bra £20 Pants £14, Ti Sento Black Resin Bracelet £35, Mono textured Kaftan, Primark UK £8.

I really like the more structured looks here and black works brilliantly as it is the best colour for a sleek silhouette. The set from Next is my favourite, the high waist shape enhancing pants are really on trend and will give you that extra bit of coverage, if you want it. To enhance the Tomb Raider style, go for chunky arm cuffs and bangles in silvers and blacks. Transforming the look for a trip to the bar go for a chunky gladiator style heel, like this gorgeous pair from Dunnes Stores and a patterned monochrome Kaftan. This look is sexy and will really make you feel confident in your swimwear.

Daniel Craig – James Bond Casino Royale

One for the boys (and let’s face it, for the ladies too…) Daniel Craig’s first outing as James Bond turns the tables on that Dr No scene by having 007 himself, rather than a Bond girl, emerge from the sea, sporting some equally skimpy swimwear, which instantly brought the tight 70s-style swim short back into fashion. Much better for the tan lines, but not forgiving on your figure, so you need to be confident and buff to pull this look off.

Here are my selections for getting the Casino Royale look:

Swim Trunks, La Perla £68

If you want to get the exact same trunks then these are the ones. A bit pricey for swimwear however La Perla are a great brand and you can feel confident that you will get your money’s worth here.

70’s Swim Shorts, AussieBum £25.06, Short Swim Shorts, H&M £9.99, Dare Swim Shorts, AussieBum £30.07.

If you don’t want to go for the tight look then these H&M short shorts will be a great choice. They are still short and have a lovely blue colour, and are a much more wearable look if you don’t want to attract too much attention! However, if attention grabbing is what you are after then these options from AussieBum will be sure to do the trick. The 70s short is very similar to Craig’s in style and looks a great shape. The name says it all for the last swimwear option. The Dare shorts are teeny! Gorgeous colours but wow you need to have one perfect bod to pull these off (or, indeed, keep them on).

Selena Gomez Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine – Spring Breakers

Selena and Vanessa definitely shed their Disney princess upbringings in Spring Breakers where four girlfriends slip into criminality after the best Spring Break ever. Although the film isn’t quite up my street I really like the girls’ swimwear looks. Fluro and fun, these looks are perfect for a party holiday. Keep the accessorises bright and let the good times roll…

Here are my top tips for getting the Spring Breakers party style:

Shockwave Sunglasses, Superdry £19.99, Here comes the Sun slogan Vest, Accessorize £15, Fluro Racerback Bikini by Ashish X, Topshop £45, Huey2 Jelly Sandals, Topshop £20,  Hit the Beach Bikini Bag, Accessorise £10, South Beach Swimwear Lime Crochet triangle Bikini, Lavish Alice Bra £18 Pants £15.

Fluro colours have been another big trend this Spring/Summer and this party style is guaranteed to get you noticed. Although it’s a bit pricey for swimwear, I really like the racerback bikini by Ashish X for Top Shop, sporty and fluro this piece is hitting two trends in one and is a winner in my eyes. Go for bold and bright accessories and if you really want to get another trend in the bag here, then get yourself a pair of Jelly sandals. You can get some cheaper ones if you look around but I really like the colour of these Huey2 Jelly Sandals. For cover-ups, go for a slogan vest dress then slip on a pair of jazzy sunglasses and you’re ready to hit the boat party till the sun goes down.
