Stand-up comedian Justin Moorhouse is to join the cast Coronation Street in order to play Dean Upton, the landlord of the Flying Horse.

Moorhouse, who has previously had roles in Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights and the Ken Loach film Looking for Eric, will make his debut this August when the Rovers Return's Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) is pitted against the rival Weatherfield boozer for a pub cricket match.

Speaking today of his signing to the ITV soap, Moorhouse said: "I’m delighted to be treading the cobbles. It’s always been a dream of mine to appear in the Rovers Return, even though as Dean, landlord of the Flying Horse, I feel like I’m a spy!"

Moorhouse, who has performed on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow as well as being a semi-regular guest on BBC Radio 5 Live's Fighting Talk, joins an impressive list of comics to have guest-starred on Coronation Street. Norman Wisdom played jogging pensioner Ernie Crabbe in 2004, Peter Kay's Eric Gartside briefly dated Shelley Unwin in the same year, while Les Dennis recently took on the role of petty thief Michael Rodwell.
