Broadchurch on ITV Encore: what was in the unseen footage?
Written By

Danny Latimer's murder has been solved – again – thanks to ITV Encore, which has just finished broadcasting the first showing of Broadchurch since the series' dramatic finale captured the nation back in spring 2013. But you savvy folk need more than just a repeat to get you to tune in, don't you? ITV know that. So does writer Chris Chibnall. So they've teamed up to deliver some extended and deleted shots which aired after tonight's episode.

So, what was new? Well, not much, in fact. At least half of the extra footage we'd already seen – namely, the scenes from Danny's wake, the lighting of the beacons and the scene in which David Tennant's DI Alec Hardy and Olivia Colman's Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller meeting to flesh out the details of Joe's arrest.

However, there were some brand new snippets. For instance, the new footage gives us a glimpse of a news anchor delivering a report on the investigation, telling his viewers: "Wessex Police tonight announced they had made an arrest in the murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer."

The start of the bulletin is then followed by a glimpse of Olly Stevens (Jonathan Bailey) and his editor Maggie (Carolyn Pickles) mocking up the Broadchurch Echo's front page with the headline "Local man charged."

Another interesting scene is from Danny's funeral, which gave us the same tear-jerking feeling as Beth Latimer's brief vision of her dead son during those new* beacon-lighting scenes. (*Sharp-eyed viewers will notice they were present in the original broadcast)

The Latimer family (Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Charlotte Beaumont and Susan Brown) are then seen at home watching Danny's hearse pull up outside with flowers in the shape of a football and spelling out his name. The scene then jumps to inside the church where Arthur Darvill's Reverend Paul Coates is delivering his sermon:

"The Bible says let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted. Forgive one another as God in Christ forgave you. After what we've been through I don't know, but we have a responsibility to ourselves and to our God to try."

We get an extra glimpse of members of the cast in the congregation – Vicky McClure's hard-nosed journalist Karen White, Echo editor Maggie and Tennant's DI Hardy – before the scene blurs into footage of Danny, Mark and local plumber Nige Carter playing football together in the park.

A new series of Broadchurch is currently being filmed in Dorset and will see the return of David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan and Arthur Darvill.
