Behind the scenes of Call the Midwife series 4: tea caddies, forceps and bacon butties

It might be months (and months, and months, and months) until Call the Midwife is back on our TV screens - Poplar's midwives are still on set filming the fourth series - but a quick flick through the gang's Twitter feeds provides a much-needed fix of our favourite period drama...

It would seem being back on set means a change in appearance for some of the cast. Who knew Patsy wasn't a natural red head?

It's no surprise that there are plenty of delivery jokes once the cast and crew get back together...

And medical props cropping up. Naturally.

Red lippy and vintage dresses aside, it's not always a glamorous life...

And the stars don't always get to travel in the lap of luxury

Or get ready in it, for that matter.

But they do get their very own name labels and multiple cups of tea. Is that a bag of fancy chocolates I spy?

Plus this lot have found some time away from the rolling cameras to hang out with Lulu so it can't be all bad.

And creator Heidi Thomas is a pretty lucky lady. She seems to have the real Doc Turner at her beck and call. (Probably because Stephen McGann who plays Poplar's GP is her off-screen husband...)

Call the Midwife will be back on BBC1 at Christmas.
