Sky 1 has cancelled fire-fighter drama The Smoke after just one series.

The broadcaster revealed that it will not be making a second series of the show which starred Battlestar Galactica actor Jamie Bamber as Kev and Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker as his wife Trish.

“We’re very proud of The Smoke, which played a key part in Sky 1’s plans to develop big scale dramas, something we will continue to do with our audience in mind,” Sky said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, sometimes tough decisions need to be made as to which dramas return and The Smoke will not be returning for a second series. We would like to thank the entire creative team and cast, and everyone at [independent producers] Kudos.”

The series failed to break the crucial 1m mark in the consolidated ratings attracting around 600,000 viewers per episode for the 8-part series one which aired between February and April this year.
