Troubled Maria Connor is to decide to take a break from Weatherfield after being exposed as the person responsible for sending malicious texts to Tyrone Dobbs.

For the past few weeks, viewers have seen Maria plaguing her first love with messages under the guise of abusive Kirsty Soames in a bid to split Ty from Fiz. But when her scheming comes to light, Maria fears a backlash from friends and neighbours.

"She's really worried. She's completely lost the plot and that's why she decides to go away for a while," says actress Samia Ghadie. "She just needs to get away from Weatherfield and Marcus and get back to being Maria. Kirk suggests that Maria goes to Cyprus for a break, which I think will do her the world of good. She should let the dust settle with Tyrone and Fiz and then start again."

Maria's descent began, of course, when Marcus did the dirty on her with the manipulative Todd Grimshaw - a revelation that led to refocusing her attention on Tyrone in the wake of her break-up. The trouble is that Tyrone and Fiz are not willing to forgive Maria for her deceitful actions and report her to the police.

"Maria's terrified by that," continues Ghadie. "She's basically had a nervous breakdown, she's certainly not herself, and I think it's a result of what's happened over the past few years. She's been heartbroken so many times and she's been through so much stuff that finding Marcus on the floor with Todd just tipped her over the edge. She does feel guilty about what she's been doing and it's completely out of character - but the guilt overrode everything because she thought she and Tyrone were made for each other."

Maria's motives may have been twisted, but the plotline has at least given Ghadie the opportunity to reunite with actors with whom she shared scenes during her early years on Corrie:

"It's been nice to work with Alan [Halsall] and Jennie [McAlpine] again, who I worked with at the very start. It's been a great challenge and there's been loads of banter. In fact, my most memorable scene remains that moment when Maria and Tyrone were in Blackpool and he proposed at the top of the Tower. It was when I'd very first joined the show and it seems to be one that other people remember too. It's one that's definitely stuck in my mind."
